Power BI meets AI-native reporting

Most business intelligence tools still work the same way they did a decade ago: someone builds a dashboard, and everyone else looks at it. Power BI and Tableau turned that into a genuine discipline, with rich modelling, gorgeous charts, and enterprise-grade governance. But the core loop hasn't changed. A question shows up, a dashboard gets built (or a queue ticket gets filed), and everyone waits. What's starting to change is the assumption underneath all of that: that reporting has to begin with a dashboard at all.

Where dashboards run out of road

Traditional BI tools are optimised for a world where an analyst builds a small number of dashboards that a large number of people reuse. That works well for the questions someone thought to ask in advance. It works badly for everything else.

  • Someone has to build it first. A dashboard doesn't exist until an analyst models the data, picks the visuals, and publishes it. Until then, the question just sits in a backlog.

Both Power BI and Tableau have noticed this and responded the same way: bolt a chat layer onto the existing dashboard stack. That's a real improvement, but it's still a chatbot wrapped around dashboard infrastructure, not a rethink of it. The answers are still bounded by whatever was already modelled.   1. A stable link that survives after the chat that created it is gone.
  2. Live data, so the report keeps working after the conversation ends instead of freezing at the moment it was built.

Without those three things, a conversational report is a novelty: impressive once, forgotten by the following week. With them, it starts to look like a real substitute for a dashboard, minus the backlog.
